The sixth generation of the 4Runner is finally here, and it’s bringing some serious updates to Toyota’s off-road game. After 15 years, this adventure machine gets a fresh start with optional turbo hybrid power. And, yes, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner is still Tacoma-based, so you can count on that classic body-on-frame toughness and comfortable interior.

Solid Foundation

As mentioned, the 4Runner is all-new from the ground up. It rides on the Toyota New Global Architecture body-on-frame (TNGA-F), the base that underpins the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia. The platform features a high-strength boxed steel-ladder frame and is equipped with a multi-link coil rear and double-wishbone front suspension.

So, what does this mean for you? Simply put, the TNGA-F is designed to support everything from full-size, comfort-focused SUVs (like the Sequoia) to the heavy-duty Tundra and Land Cruiser. You’re getting a solid mix of strength, smooth road manners, and comfort, even when riding in the available third row.

Powertrain

The 2025 4Runner comes with two punchy and efficient turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. First up is the gas-only i-FORCE engine, which pushes out 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft of torque. That’s about seven more horsepower and 39 more lb.-ft of torque compared to the old V6 engine, making the next chapter of the 4Runner a more powerful ally on all your adventures.

Toyota has also brought hybrid power to the mix. The i-FORCE MAX engine delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft of torque, making it the most powerful powerplant ever offered on the 4Runner. That’s saying something, especially when you think about the V6s and V8s that have graced the previous generations. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission ensures smooth, seamless shifts.

Off-Road Chops

The off-road legacy of the 4Runner is nothing short of iconic, and the 2025 model only strengthens that reputation by adding an optional stabilizer bar disconnect mechanism for increased suspension articulation, up to 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles, and an available multi-terrain monitor system that lets you see potential hazards on the center display.

You get to choose between RWD, part-time 4WD, or full-time 4WD. RWD models feature automatic limited-slip differential, while four-wheel variants pack that in addition to an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case. Depending on the trim, you might get extras like rear lockers, downhill assist control, improved shocks, and 33-inch all-terrain tires.

Trail-Ready Interior

The 2025 4Runner receives Toyota’s latest technology, highlighted by a new 8-inch or available 14-inch touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Key functions like the transfer case and Multi-Terrain Select each get dedicated physical controls. These are massive and easy to use, even if you’re wearing gloves.
